“In my experience as a tenants attorney, what landlords call ‘squatters’ are actually holdovers, i.e. tenants who stayed past their lease,” said the attorney, who works with Saratoga County clients. "What can happen is the landlord fails to give these notices and the tenant is not aware the landlord wanted to terminate the lease. They then say 'oh these folks are squatters' when in reality the landlord is the one who didn’t keep up their end of the contract."
